<p>Being a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine I have also found that there is much to learn from animals about health and wellness.</p>
<p>For months when I studied in Toronto I had a little cat that would come and sit on my lap as I sat outside and studied Acupressure massage.</p>
<p>I would practice my techniques on this cat as he allowed me to pet him. It taught me how to communicate with the patient subconsciously by listening with my hands where imbalances may lie.</p>
<p>Also this tiny animals gentle frame taught me how to best apply soft and strong pressure to allow for better relaxation and therapeutic effect.</p>
<p>The lessons we learn from nature may be small or life changing but the key thing is to be aware with an open heart and mind.</p>
<p>As spring approaches I encourage you all to get outside and interact with you environment. You maybe surprised what you learn about yourself and your surroundings!</p>

<p>Resistance training is an ESSENTIAL component to everyone&#8217;s health and wellness plan. I often see the effects of my treatments (acupuncture) boosted when clients follow a proper fitness regime.</p>
<p>I have recently accepted a part-time offer with the city of Ottawa, working as a personal trainer at the Kanata Leisure Center fitness facility.</p>
<p>I will be in the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with an additional Saturday opening up in the spring.</p>

Congee [<em>KON gee</em>], also known as <em>jook</em> or <em>juk,</em> is a rice porridge commonly served for breakfast in China. Bland in taste, it acts as a base for many toppings, including ginger, scallion, soy sauce, sesame oil, fish, peanuts, shrimp, and eggs. Made with one part rice to about sixteen parts liquid, congee is easy to digest and tonifies the body, so it is often given to weak or frail people.</p>
<p>The following congee is prepared with astragalus root. Astragalus is a herb that is native to China. It is thought to relieve weakness and fatigue and to enhance stamina and immunity. In traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus is often recommended in the winter to prevent colds and flu, however, it is generally<em> not taken once a cold or flu begins.</em></p>
<p><strong>Cold Winter C</strong><strong>ongee</strong><br />
1 oz. astragalus root<br />
1/2 cup long-grain white rice<br />
8 cups of water or stock<br />
12 black dates, soaked and pitted<br />
1 large or 2 small carrots, diced<br />
1 tbsp. fresh ginger, minced<br />
2 tsp. cinnamon<br />
1/2 tsp. powdered ginger<br />
1 tsp. powdered cardamom seed</p>
<p>Place all the ingredients in a large pot. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 1 to 2 hours until the congee is soft and the consistency of porridge. Remove the astragalus root. This congee can be served with a dash of cinnamon and a pat of butter.</p>
<p>People with autoimmune disease, cancer, or other chronic illnesses should consult a health practitioner. Astragalus root can be found at Asian herb shops or selected health food stores. It is about a dried, slightly yellow root approximately 5 inches in length.</p>
